In Midtown Atlanta, Hampton Inn and Suites tower at Arts Center proposed again

Changes to the plans, which adversely affect pedestrian access around the site, caused the DRC to delay approval

A long-planned hotel near Arts Center in Midtown could soon get underway, assuming the developer can make needed design revisions.

According to Midtown Alliance, an 18-story Hampton Inn and Suites at the corner of West Peachtree and 15th streets, next door to Arts Center MARTA station, was presented to the neighborhood’s Development Review Committee (DRC) this week.

Plans call for North Point Hospitality Group to construct the 186-room hotel atop seven stories of parking on a tiny lot that once held a restaurant.

Early last year, the building that had stood on the site for decades was cleared in preparation for construction. However, the land has remained vacant and fenced since, leaving many to wonder what the status of the project is as other projects moved forward around it.

While the project was approved last year, a redesign that relocated the lobby to the top level of the hotel and added a second curb cut to the parking garage has left the project in limbo.

Because of the impact of changes on 15th Street—the new arrangement would be troublesome for pedestrians, apparently—the DRC requested that the developer revisit the proposal before receiving approval.

If the developer can make the changes asked for by the DRC, construction could begin in the coming months.
