Open House Atlanta event promises free weekend of architectural exploration

New, 5 comments

Held in cities around the world, the new-to-Atlanta event will open the doors of more than 40 buildings—many normally off-limits.

Heads up, architecture buffs of the ATL:

Next month, Atlantans will get the chance to explore buildings across Buckhead, Midtown, and downtown as part of the city’s first Open House event.

Modeled after popular programs in other major cities around the world, Open House Atlanta will take place the weekend of Oct. 21 and 22. The free festival will offer a chance to “go behind the scenes of Atlanta architecture and meet some of the people who design, build, and preserve the city,” according to a press release.

With more than 40 buildings—clustered along the Peachtree corridor—participating in the inaugural year, there promises to be plenty to see.

Sites on the list include historic properties such as the Flatiron Building and Baltimore Block, as well as more modern additions to the skyline like the Four Season Hotel and YOO on the Park.

Guests at Baltimore Block will get to wander through 120-year-old townhomes.

In addition to buildings, parks, and sites to see, the list of participating venues also includes a handful of architecture offices, promising a glimpse behind the curtain of local design.

The event is supported by Atlanta’a AIA chapter as well as Central Atlanta Progress, Midtown Alliance, and Livable Buckhead. New York-based firm S9 Architecture, who worked on Ponce City Market and is currently leading design efforts on 725 Ponce, South Downtown, and Underground Atlanta is the “Design Sponsor” for the event.

For more information on the festival, check out the event’s website.

As the weekend gets closer, we’ll share a map and more information about where to pick up guidebooks.

YOO on the Park is also on the list.
