Just when it seemed there were enough apartments under construction in Midtown, another tower has jumped into the mix.
According to Bisnow, construction has begun on 13th Street, near Piedmont Park, on a 310-unit building. Vireo is slated to rise 26 stories on a site cleared of old homes and a two-story apartment block earlier this year.
Designed by Smallwood Reynolds Stewart and Stewart, the Lennar Multifamily project will contain 32 workforce housing units, thanks to a 10-year tax abatement from Invest Atlanta. The project will cost more than $100 million.
Renderings show that the building won’t be a striking addition to the skyline, but rather a simple glass box, punctuated by regimented balconies marching up the side of the tower.
The latest in a series of towers that can only be described as “formulaic,” the building will provide views of Piedmont Park.
The project joins other not-so-exciting towers by the firm, who served as architect for Novare’s lambasted Skyhouse towers, once characterized as “aesthetic monotony.”
With construction beginning this fall, expect the tower to be delivered sometime in early 2019.
