When it was first listed for sale in November 2018, this unit atop The Residences at the St. Regis Atlanta caught the attention of many real estate watchers.

Not surprisingly, the 9,825-square-foot penthouse’s price tag was noteworthy.

At $15.9 million, it was the city’s most expensive condo twice over at the time, and now that it’s officially traded for $13.9 million, it’s become the priciest condo ever sold in Georgia history, industry sources tell Curbed Atlanta.

A look at Buckhead.com’s list of the 10 most expensive homes sold in Buckhead last year makes the condo’s purchase price even more impressive.

After all, the next closest sale was a 12,035-square-foot manse in Mount Paran/Northside for $11.3 million.

A second St. Regis Atlanta unit made the 2019 list, but closed for only $5.7 million. Currently, its neighboring condo, both located on the 18th floor, is also listed at $5.7 million.

The penthouse sellers—Howard Halpern, former owner of The Buckhead Beef Co. and current owner of Halpern and Associates LLC, and his wife, Lynne—originally purchased the unit in 2009 as the property was under development.

The purchase price then? $6.65 million.

According to industry sources, the buyer is a certain local tech billionaire.

The question remains: What does this record-setting sale mean for the future of high-rise condo sales around Atlanta? Will prices receive a boost, or will this turn out to be a unicorn in the market?
