Another piece of Atlanta’s historical fabric has met the wrecking ball.
A few months ago, North Carolina-based developer Grubb Properties demolished the old Grant Park School, a Spanish Colonial Revival-style structure built in 1930.
Grubb is replacing the school, which most recently served as home base for the Atlanta Arts Exchange, with the Link Apartments Grant Park, according to Greystone Bassuk, a New York-based real estate finance advisory firm facilitating the development.
Grubb recently earned a $36.5 million construction loan, which means 246 apartments and a three-story townhome building could be delivered in the not-too-distant future.
Sited on four acres at 750 Kalb Street SE, the residential community is expected to feature a clubhouse, game room, fitness facilities, outdoor terrace, and communal green space connecting to the neighboring Atlanta Stockade, which is undergoing an adaptive-reuse project led by Colliers International and Urban Realty Partners.
Historic preservationists who’d otherwise be fired up about the demolition of the Grant Park School might breath a sigh of relief to learn the Atlanta Stockade, as well as the adjacent blacksmith’s forge and stables—all built around 1895—will remain standing and be converted into an office campus.
Update: This story was corrected on March 15, 2019 at 1:05 p.m. to indicate the the historic building had already been demolished.
