Get outside and take advantage of the great offerings available along one of Atlanta’s hottest outdoor spaces

Summer is heating up in Atlanta, and everyone wants to be outside, so what better place to spend time in the sun than along the Beltline? From east to west and everywhere in between, this pedestrian loop is home to a variety of events all season long.

Whether it’s educational walking tours and volunteer work or fitness runs and holiday celebrations, there’s something for all ages and interests.

So check your calendar, choose an event (or two or three), and make plans to enjoy a few hours in the great outdoors.

Sidewalk Talk

Feel the need to talk with someone, but don’t know where to turn? That’s where Sidewalk Talk comes in. From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 16, volunteers will set up chairs on the Beltline at the North Avenue Bridge, ready to listen to whatever visitors have to say. Just pull up a seat, and get started. The goal is to nurture human connection by engaging in “heart-centered listening,” which leads to empathy, a sense of belonging, and improved wellness for everyone who participates.

King of Pops Yoga

Get ready to strike your favorite yoga poses as the sun sets at the Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark. Starting at 6:30 p.m. on June 17, this free class led by Rachelle Knowles is a great way to get acquainted with yoga, or get your zen on before a busy work week starts. Finish up the evening with your favorite flavor from King of Pops.

Piedmont Park History Walking Tour

Find out how Piedmont Park started and became one of Atlanta’s most visited iconic destinations during this free tour. Lasting between 60 and 90 minutes, the tour starts at 11 a.m. on June 23 at the Green Market and Piedmont Park Conservancy information table at the 12th Street and Piedmont Avenue Park entrance.

Tanyard Creek Park Beautification

Head to the Northside Trail on June 29 at 9 a.m., and join fellow volunteers as they gather to clean up and beautify Tanyard Creek Park to make it yet another gorgeous stop along the Beltline. Now in its third year, this event is a wonderful way to give back while celebrating our local parks.

Maddox Park Beautification and Family Fun Day

On June 30 at 9 a.m., bring the family to help with landscape and beautification projects at Maddox Park on the Westside Trail. After the hard work is done, it’s time to play. Families can enjoy lunch followed by a wealth of fun activities for all ages.

Rooftop Backyard Luau

Don your grass skirt and favorite lei, and head to The Roof at Ponce City Market for a tropical celebration of July Fourth! Starting at 5 p.m., indulge in barbecue, unlimited rides on the three-story ride and Heege tower, and settle in for the best view of fireworks lighting up the city skyline.

Westside 5K + 8K

Starting at 7:30 a.m. on July 14 at Lee + White, explore the West End Trend — the original segment of the Beltline — as you make your way through Westview along either a 5K or 8K race route. Regardless of which you choose, once you cross the finish line, head to Monday Night Brewing Garage for the after party, which includes free beer.

For those who loved a good game of tug-and-war or sack races during Field Day while in elementary school, the Atlanta Field Day on July 14 at 11 a.m. in Historic Fourth Ward Park is just for you. Only this grown-up version not only includes games, but also eats from your favorite food trucks, and, of course, an onsite bar. Grab your friends, and sign up today. Go the extra mile by dressing in creative costume, and see if you can score the Team Spirit award.

Taking place on the “Infamous loop around Atlanta,” this race invites runners (and even non-runners) to hit an ever-changing course as it transcends from street to track to trail to gravel and so on as the Beltline is completed. Starting at Rose Circle Park at 8 a.m., the approximate distance is listed as “20 miles … ish.” It’s definitely one way to see how the Beltline has evolved since its inception.
