Fun for the whole family, these events showcase recent box office hits and familiar favorites

Summer in Atlanta is heating up, and that means heading outdoors to enjoy the best of the season. It also means the return of movies under the stars, a popular event that resonates with locals all across the metro. Not only are these events family-friendly, but they also are budget-friendly, with all screening movies for free.

Movie selections range from big box-office hits like “Captain Marvel” to familiar favorites such as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Regardless of what’s showing on the screen, rest assured it will be a good time for everyone.

Atlantic Station

Through its “Movies in the District” series, Atlantic Station offers free movies on District Avenue beginning at dusk, usually around 8:30 p.m. The event takes place every Thursday in June, with the next showing on June 6 with a viewing of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.

While some seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs. Dogs are welcome as well.

This annual free movie event kicked off in May and continues on Aug. 17 with “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and Sept. 7 with “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse.” Movies start when the sun goes down, and guests are welcome to bring their own blankets and chairs. Pack a picnic, and enjoy dinner before the movie starts.

Locals have two options for free movie nights in Brookhaven. As part of its “Movies in the Moonlight,” guests can catch free screenings at the city’s different parks now through August. These events start at 7:30 p.m. Up next is “How to Train Your Dragon: A Hidden World” on June 7 at Skyland Park.

Brookhaven also is hosting “Dive-In Movie Nights” at select parks, with each event starting at 9 p.m. The first viewing in this series is “Aquaman,” set for June 15 at Murphey Candler Park. Concession stands to purchase snacks will be available at all events. 

B at the Movies

This free, family-friendly event from B98.5 returns with movies all around Atlanta. Running through Dec. 7 on select dates, the events will host free movies in Dallas, Dunwoody, Lawrenceville, Roswell, and Suwanee. Before the movie starts at dusk, enjoy games, snacks, and other fun activities.

Movies include “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “Captain Marvel,” and “Dumbo,” among others. The full schedule with locations is available on the website.

Hapeville

Head to Jess Lucas Park in Hapeville on the third Friday of June and July for free movies for the whole family. Events start at 7:30 p.m., followed by the movie showing at dusk. The June 21 movie will be “Mary Poppins Returns,” with “Incredibles 2” showing on July 19.

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and get there early for a good viewing spot. In the event of rain, movie night will be moved to Hoyt Smith Center Gymnasium. 

Center Hill Park

On June 22 at 7:30 p.m., local residents and visitors are invited to see a free showing of “Step” at Center Hill Park in Bankhead. Hosted by local resident Rolanda Powell, the event is designed to bring together residents and visitors alike to celebrate community.
