Downtown's Depressingly Few Grocery Options, In a Cute Map!

View as Map

On the heels of last month's major announcement of WRS Inc.'s planned purchase of Underground Atlanta, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that the hypothetical new owner is in talks with a grocery store for the hypothetical new urban center slated to rise on the site. While nothing is set in stone, the news is a big deal for current and future residents and the general livability of downtown Atlanta, which currently has no grocery store. The article mentions Walmart Neighborhood Market, City Target and Publix as possible options, though the future is hardly clear. Downtown has been a food desert since Kroger shuttered across from City Hall in 2005. To illustrate the lack of grocers in the downtown area, we've mapped out the limited options for buying the basics around our supposed urban nucleus. If downtown is going to thrive, we need to do better.

The closest grocery to downtown, the small market has the basic essentials, though from the Google view inside, seems to lack fresh produce and meat. Not a one-stop-shop, it is walking/biking distance from downtown, at just under a mile away.

The Boxcar Grocer

The Boxcar Grocer is a mile south of downtown. A "health food" retailer and neighborhood grocer, the setting is charming, but the selection doesn't match a big-name outfit.

Publix Super Market at Piedmont

Publix at Piedmont and North Avenue is the closest big-name grocery to downtown. A mile-and-a-half north of Five Points, the store will contend with an influx of patrons as the neighborhood's population swells.

Hardy's Market

Around since 1946, Hardy's garners mixed reviews online (as in there are two reviews, a five-star and a one-star). The sign touts meat and vegetables, but we aren't quite sure if it is a full-fledged grocery, and two miles from downtown, it isn't exactly close.

Publix Super Market at The Plaza Midtown

The Publix at Plaza Midtown is two miles due north of downtown. The store caters to the highrises and Georgia Tech students of the neighborhood.

Save-A-Lot

Save-a-lot is located at the Mall at West End, a little more than two miles south of downtown. From the looks of things, it's easy to get a parking space, though for the downtown pedestrian, it would be quite a trek.

Big Bear Foods

Located two-and-a-half miles south of downtown, Google describes the market as "a compact, bare-bones grocery store selling fruits & vegetables, meat, fish & packaged items."

While this Kroger has a rocky reputation, recently renovated and easily accessible to the Beltline, it's now putting its best foot forward. Though almost three miles from downtown, getting ice cream home unmelted in the summer sun is a tall order for those on foot.

Known as "Kroger Citi Center," the store is another contender for rebranding as "Beltline Kroger" as it sits adjacent to the under-construction Westside Trail. Three miles from downtown, there isn't all that much "Citi Center" about it.

Publix Super Market at Ponce

The Publix on Ponce is located in located at the northern edge of Poncey-Highlands, more than three miles from downtown. For any urban resident without a car, it is all but too far.
