Atlanta United’s $1.5-billion permanent home—a grandiose NFL coliseum with a special configuration for MLS games—will be open for business in a little more than four months.
With features such as a rooftop solar array canopy, cisterns, water treatment facility, composting toilets, and food gardens, the $30 million "Living Building" will be as much a teaching tool as an academic facility.
For more than six months, preservationists have fought for protection of buildings along Means Street, just west of Georgia Tech. After some modifications, the proposal passed unanimously and is now off to the mayor to sign.
Last year, a proposal to replace a 1930s brick commercial building with a gas station sparked a push by preservationists. Now, the City Council Zoning Committee has recommended that the area west of Georgia Tech be protected.
